Abraham intent on gatecrashing England's World Cup plans

City A.M. Monday, 6 November 2017 ()
Abraham intent on gatecrashing England's World Cup plansRookie striker Tammy Abraham insists he is determined to fire himself into Gareth Southgate’s World Cup plans by making a goalscoring splash during England’s friendlies with Germany and Brazil.

On-loan Chelsea marksman Abraham has scored five goals in 13 appearances for Swansea this season and is one of three uncapped players in Southgate’s experimental squad for the two games.

The 20-year-old, who opted to play for England instead of Nigeria – his father’s country of birth – is ready to stake his claim for regular international game time when the Three Lions take on Germany at Wembley on Friday and Brazil on Tuesday.

“I just want to go out and show the world what I’m truly made of,” said Abraham. “I feel like I’m ready but it won’t be easy. I just have to keep proving to the manager in training and showing why he picked me and just keep working as hard as I can.”

Despite leaving Stamford Bridge on a temporary basis for the second campaign in succession – he scored 26 goals for Championship side Bristol City last season – Abraham is also intent on sealing a place in Chelsea’s long-term plans.

He added: “My focus is on Swansea but my main target will be to be in that Chelsea squad one day.”
