Despite reports to the contrary early last week, it appears that legendary pop star Madonna is set to adopt two more Malawian children, twin girls, from the country – after it was ruled that she is legally able to do so. The singer had previously raised controversy over her adoptions of children Mercy and David from the country, whom she has since brought home to the US. The singer, who has two of her own biological children, is set to fly back with the twin girls shortly.
Madonna had previously denied that she was aiming to adopt more children from the country, stating that she was in fact in the country for charity work. However, it appears that the star has now been granted legal parentage of the girls, whose biological father gave consent in court and whose mother died from childbirth complications in 2012. It is a decision that goes against claims made by former Malawi President Joyce Banda, who has claimed that the singer has been exploitative in her aid work. The controversy surrounding her adoption of Mercy James in 2009, too, was highlighted by certain family members of the girl claiming that they had pleaded to see their relative on her return trips to Malawi. This time, at least, it appears that the adoption process is cut and dried – and has been recognized by a court of law in the country.
Madonna’s adoptions come not long after controversy last year over custody problems regarding her biological son Rocco. Rocco is now residing with his father, Madonna’s ex-husband and film director Guy Ritchie, in the UK – an event that led to the singer making a series of bizarre statements regarding her son on stage in 2016. The singer, too, made headlines recently for her alleged connection with film star Idris Elba, as the close friends were thought to have been an item.
Regardless of whether or not Madonna continues to hit the Billboard Hot 100, she continues to fascinate the press – and she has done so for almost forty years. Her music is still fervently followed by fans around the world, continuing to prove that she very much has a place in the world of music. She is an enduring icon and referred to as the Queen of Pop – and it is highly likely that her star power will weather any storms that may come her way in future, including any issues that may arise from this recent adoption.
