Tom Hiddleston's Golden Globes Speech - What Was All That About?

Tom Hiddleston's Golden Globes Speech - What Was All That About?by

Speeches at awards ceremonies – be they for movies, music, or otherwise – carry their own kind of drama. It’s a fleeting moment where we get to see a star truly be themselves, away from candid paparazzi and away from the screen or radio. We get to see them offer genuine thanks for the hard work they put in, and some speeches can be more than a little revealing. Following this weekend’s Golden Globes ceremony, Meryl Streep certainly set the media abuzz with comments regarding President-elect Donald Trump – who, naturally, gave as good as he got via Twitter – but another speech set Twitter abuzz more than perhaps any other this weekend, and it was from a rather unexpected source.

Tom Hiddleston, the British actor best known for his portrayal as Loki in the Avengers franchise and most recently in his award-winning role in the TV series The Night Manager, grabbed trending topics and headlines alike coming into the new week as he gave a speech following his Best Actor in a Mini-Series gong at the Golden Globes. The star recalled a story where he had engaged with medical staff in South Sudan, who were working with Medicin Sans Frontiers – during his time volunteering with the United Nations Children’s Fund in the country. Speaking about meeting people delivering essential aid and support to those in need, he then spoke about how the people he met had told him they had watched The Night Manager during a shelling the month before – going on to state that he was proud to have provided entertainment and relief to the workers.

Hiddleston’s speech was met with considerable negativity on Twitter, with many accusing the star of ‘humblebragging’, or perpetuating the act of being a ‘white saviour’. The criticism levelled at Hiddleston focuses on how many perceived his speech to be a plug for the show that evolved from recounting his experience in war-torn Sudan – and that it may not have been the most sensitive of moves to make. Others reacted by posting reaction shots of those in the crowd at the Golden Globes, with photos of Christian Slater picking up particular steam.

Hiddleston has since addressed the media frenzy over the speech by apologising and advising that he was incredibly nervous when receiving the award – that he ‘inelegantly expressed’ himself during the moment. This, at least, goes to show one thing – that even the world’s most talented actors can’t be perfect on the microphone seven days a week!
