La La Land Destroys Long-Standing Golden Globes Record

La La Land Destroys Long-Standing Golden Globes Recordby

It’s the movie that just about everyone in Hollywood is talking about – and while it’s been entrancing US viewers for some time, it is only due to hit UK cinemas this week – La La Land is proving to be nothing short of a phenomenon, beyond what some may have assumed to be a bubble of critical praise early last month. However, it is a bubble that is yet to burst – and here at One News Page, we too understand and recommend the hype – it’s a movie that is worthy of all the accolades and praise that are lining up for it.

The modern-day musical comedy, filmed in the style of Hollywood classics of old, stars Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone – and is directed by Damien Chazelle, who has previously been lauded for his work on Whiplash, a breakthrough movie that turned just as many critics’ heads a few years ago. Last weekend, it picked up even more positive media coverage as it broke a record that has been standing for over 40 years – one previously set by One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest – as it not only picked up a landmark seven Golden Globes, but also won in every category in which it was nominated. This is no ordinary musical!

It was praised in categories as diverse as Best Musical or Comedy Film, Best Screenplay, Best Score, Best Song, Best Director and Best Actor – male and female – for Gosling and Stone. The movie’s unprecedented sweep of awards has certainly not gone unnoticed by those aiming to make picks for Oscar sweepstakes in the next month, as Chazelle’s masterpiece is predicted to perform well at this year’s Academy Awards. Up against likely strong competition in war movie Hacksaw Ridge, drama Manchester By The Sea and harrowing coming of age tale Moonlight in February, La La Land could now well be a safe bet for several gongs despite its amazing rivals.

What is it about the movie that has so many people talking, and so many awards flying in its direction? Arguably, it may be that it is a well-made and unique movie in a sea of copycat films – and that despite its charms and nuances, never seems to take itself too seriously. The hard work for everyone involved in the production has certainly paid off, however, as it looks set to be a memorable modern classic that has set the bar high for future film-makers – and many will now be looking to Chazelle intently on the cinematic moves he makes next.
