2017 is set to be another huge year for many movie studios, and with Oscar season just around the corner, it’s likely that many people will now start to think about what they’d like to see in the months to come. Comic book movies, of course, will be on the agenda once again – with Spider-Man : Homecoming and Wonder Woman likely to take much interest from fans on either side of the superhero spectrum – but there is another franchise that is turning out a sequel this year which is said to have received a perfect score in a recent test screening. The movie? Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 – which is set to hit theaters in May this year.
The original Guardians movie was a shock success – while it was an extraordinarily entertaining film with varied characters and plenty of action and tongue-in-cheek dialogue, it vastly outperformed anyone’s expectations – paving the way for an inevitable sequel. Vol. 2 is set to bring back the same cast of rogues from the first movie, albeit in a movie that now has the knowledge that there are millions of fans baying for its debut – which may mean that it could be considerably better received, if possible. Test screenings are not always the best indicator of quality in terms of how a movie will perform for critics and wider audiences, however, they do give a reasonable indication as to what we could expect. With a supposed score of 100 having been granted to the movie, according to THR, it’s a rare boost to a film that was already shaping up to be a fairly hotly-anticipated picture.
Disney’s Marvel universe has had a fantastic 2016 and it is highly likely that, if quality is to be kept at the same level – at the very least – their films will continue to pull in box office money and praise from their core audiences. While Marvel movies may not always hit home with wide audiences, nor appeal to all critics, they have an uncanny knack of being able to bring great stories and characters to the big screen that do their source material justice. Guardians of the Galaxy is a franchise that perhaps embodies the Marvel Cinematic spirit more than any other – it’s bold, it’s brash, it’s off-the-wall, it’s a lot of fun and there’s plenty to keep you occupied. If that doesn’t make for a great movie – what does? We will have a review for Guardians 2 when it arrives later this year.
