Will The Next Star Wars Movie Change Everything?

Will The Next Star Wars Movie Change Everything?by

If there’s a movie this year which was set to turn tongues wagging like any other, it was always going to be Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Disney, who own the franchise, have played a shrewd game in minimizing details being brought forward about the movie up until very recently – after all, we didn’t even know the name of the eighth instalment until a few weeks ago! The first trailer for the latest movie, which will hit theaters this holiday season, has finally landed – and with it, a whole host of excited questions. Just who does the ‘Last Jedi’ refer to? Is it singular, or plural? More than this, one particular line spoken at the end of the short clip to advertise the film has set off a chain reaction in wild speculation and fan theory unlike any other.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi Official Teaser

At the end of the trailer, the returning Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) states, “It’s time for the Jedi to end.” What could this mean? Is this a hint as to where Luke’s allegiance now lies? Is it a statement on where the Jedi as a people stand in the movie universe’s current climate? Or is Rey (Daisy Ridley) well and truly the last in the privileged line? Fans have come up with an even more interesting theory than those – and, if proven true, it could be taking the series in a shock new direction and could open up for a climactic final instalment.

The line has been interpreted by some to suggest what has been termed as the ‘Grey Jedi’ – in that for too long, the sides of dark and light have been too separate – and that this absolutism has in fact led to the rise of some of the universe’s most notorious dictators – of course, referring to Darth Vader and Kylo Ren. Could it be that the new movie may suggest the Jedi occupy a middle ground – taking positives from dark and light – in order to survive? Could Luke’s cryptic line suggest that the Jedi will simply end as we know it?

Speculation will have to run rife until this December, when the hotly-anticipated Episode VIII hits cinemas. Fans will also be intrigued to see how Leia Organa – portrayed by the late Carrie Fisher – will fit into the final proceedings of the saga following the actor’s passing. Get those lightsabers ready – not long to go now!
