NetSpend reminds its cardholders how they can avoid problems or delays receiving the tax refunds they deposit on their NetSpend prepaid cards.

The 2014 tax season officially kicks off today and so begins the wait for many NetSpend cardholders who will watch their accounts closely for their tax refunds to arrive. More than 870,000 NetSpend cardholders directly deposited tax refunds on their NetSpend prepaid cards in 2013, many of whom would otherwise wait for a check to arrive in the mail and stand in line to cash it.

NetSpend reminds cardholders they can take steps now to avoid problems receiving tax refunds on their NetSpend cards.
NetSpend suggests cardholders double-check the routing and account numbers they provide when they are filing. “If deposits go to the wrong routing or account number, it can delay a cardholder’s refund, so we encourage our cardholders to double check the numbers when they file,” said NetSpend Customer Experience VP Lisa Henken-Ramirez. “Cardholders have three easy ways to get those numbers: one, text the word ‘DIRECT’ to 22622 if you’re enrolled in Anytime Alerts™; two, print a direct deposit form from the online account center; or three, go to the mobile app menu and choose ‘My Direct Deposit Info.’”
NetSpend posts tax refunds to cardholder accounts the same day it receives them from the Internal Revenue Service as long as the accounts are active and in good standing.
“If you expect to receive a refund on your NetSpend card, be sure to check your account online or through the mobile app to confirm your account is active,” continued Henken-Ramirez.
Keeping mailing address and other contact details up-to-date can help cardholders avoid delays and receive timely account updates from NetSpend. Cardholders enrolled in Anytime Alerts™ will receive a notification as soon as NetSpend deposits their refunds. To protect consumers from fraud, NetSpend will not post a tax refund to an account unless the name on the tax refund matches the name on the account.
“It’s especially important to make sure that you have an active personalized card and to check that the names on your tax return match the names on your account. For example, if you moved in with your partner and want to have his tax refund deposited to your NetSpend account, you will need to add him to your account as a secondary cardholder,” said Henken-Ramirez.
The IRS will begin processing returns on January 31 on a first-come-first-serve basis. Cardholders who want to find out when they should expect their refunds should consult Where’s My Refund or call the IRS refund hotline at 1-800-829-1954.
