Frank Lampard hails Chelsea's 'main man' Didier Drogba after final win

Saturday, 19 May 2012

The showpiece match at the Allianz Arena may prove to be Drogba's last for the Blues as his contract expires next month, but if it was, he went out in style.

Bayern looked set to be crowned European champions when Thomas Muller gave them the lead in the 83rd minute, but Drogba demonstrated his big-game pedigree when he sent a bullet header past Manuel Neuer to make it 1-1 five minutes later.

Chelsea negotiated extra-time - thanks mainly to Petr Cech saving an Arjen Robben spot-kick - and the veteran striker kept his cool when he stepped up to take the tenth kick of the penalty shootout and slotted it beyond Neuer to make it 4-3.

Lampard, who captained the Blues in the absence of the suspended John Terry, lavished praise on his team-mate.

'Our main man Didier Drogba has dug us out of trouble there,' said the midfielder, who also scored in the shootout.

'He is a hero. Without him we're not here. He scores the goals in the big games.'

Lampard also hailed the team spirit in the Chelsea camp, after they ended a difficult campaign with two trophies, having already clinched the FA Cup.

'I can't believe it. The season we have had, the determination and spirit we have shown. This is the one we really wanted and we've got it,' he said.

Drogba was quick to point out Cech deserved praise for a performance that saw him save a penalty from Robben in extra-time and one from Ivica Olic in the shootout.

'When we have this guy in goal you have to believe,' said the striker.

The Ivorian added he thought the Blues' name had been on the trophy from the start.

Asked if the win was fate, Drogba said: 'It was. I believe a lot in destiny, I pray a lot. It was written a long time ago, but we did not know. God is wonderful and this team is amazing.

'I want to dedicate this cup to all the managers we've had before and all the players I've played with before.'
