Deathtoll of British soldiers in Afghanistan surpasses 400 after six UK soldiers believed killed in Afghan explosionby

An explosion is believed to have killed six UK troops in Afghanistan, raising the UK death toll in the region to 404

LONDON, United Kingdom -- The British defence ministry confirmed six UK soldiers were missing and presumed dead after their armoured vehicle was hit by an explosion in southern Afghanistan on Tuesday.

If confirmed, the incident will have been the single largest loss of life for British troops in the region since 2006. The overall death toll for British forces since 2001 will have raised to 404.

British Prime Minister David Cameron said it was a "desperately sad day for our country".

Speaking from Downing Street, he said: "It is a reminder of the huge price that we are paying for the work we are doing in Afghanistan and the sacrifice that our troops have made and continue to make.

"I do believe it's important work for our national security right here at home but of course this work will increasingly be carried out by Afghan soldiers and we all want to see that transition take place."

The latest incident involved five soldiers from the 3rd Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment and one from the 1st Battalion The Duke of Lancaster's Regiment, the defence ministry confirmed.

Britain has some 9,500 soldiers in Afghanistan at present.
