The former policeman, who was shot and blinded by fugitive Raoul Moat in July 2010, was found hanged at his home in Blyth, Northumberland on February 29.

Scores of people arrived at Stafford Crematorium to say a final farewell to Pc Rathband, who committed himself to charity work following his injury.

The service began on an upbeat note, with the Monty Python classic Always Look On The Bright Side Of Life opening proceedings and drawing laughs from some of the crowd.

Those gathered were told that Pc Rathband's family wanted the event to be a celebration of his life and everything he achieved.

Humanist celebrant Carly Fee added that the song was chosen as it 'encapulates David's own optimistic outlook and irrepressible humour'.

Today's event follows last week's memorial service in Newcastle upon Tyne, where Northumbria Police chief constable Sue Sim and actor Tim Healy were among the well-wishers that gathered to remember the officer.
