Christopher Krumm had already butchered his father's live-in girlfriend, Heidi Arnold, whose body was found in the gutter outside their home a couple of miles away.

He then made his way to the college, hiding a powerful hunter's compound bow and two knives under a blanket, to where his computer science instructor father, James Krumm, worked.

After shooting his father with the arrow, Christopher Krumm stabbed himself, then fatally stabbed his father in the chest in a struggle in the classroom.

Police said 56-year-old James Krumm's bravery may have saved lives.

'I can tell you the courage that was demonstrated by Mr Krumm was absolutely without equal,' said Casper Police Chief Chris Walsh.

Dozens of police descended on the college, where they also began to receive reports of what had happened to Ms Arnold, a 42-year-old maths instructor.

Officers found James Krumm dead and Christopher Krumm in his final moments, and then locked down the campus for two hours.

He said Krumm also had two knives with him and the knife used was 'very large'.

'It's one of those situations you don't think is going to come home. It's not going to happen here,' Mr Walsh said.

Police were unable to say what had happened between the father and son.

'It's difficult to say. I don't think it was very close,' Mr Walsh said.
