MTV Film And TV Awards Set To Go Gender-Neutralby

While we may have only recently seen the back of the Oscars and the BAFTAs, MTV’s own annual star-studded Film and TV awards extravaganza is fast approaching. The ceremony will this year be hosted by American comedian Adam Devine in Los Angeles on May 7th – but there’s something a little different to proceedings in 2017 that may well set the tone for future years and ceremonies to come.

The entire show, it is reported, has been subject to a complete revamp – both in terms of the categories on display and the types of media being honored. One of the most interesting changes being rolled out this year includes the addition of TV shows and movies from streaming services such as Netflix to nominees listed – this, of course, means that huge streaming hits such as last summer’s Stranger Things – Netflix’s colossal sleeper hit that is now approaching its second season - is now in league with steadfast TV favorites such as HBO’s Game of Thrones to win gongs.

"We're living in a golden age of content, and great storytelling and characters resonate regardless of whether you're watching it in a theatre or on TV. The new MTV Movie & TV Awards will celebrate even more of the brightest, bravest, funniest and most shared films and TV shows resonating across youth culture,” MTV president Chris McCarthy advised, clearly keen to capitalize on the changing world of entertainment – and that’s not the only thing that’s changing, nor is it the only big alteration to this year’s ceremony.

MTV have completely scrapped gendered categories - instead replacing them with gender neutral prizes. Rather than having separate divisions and gongs for Best Actor and Best Actress, recipients will now compete against each other in a ‘non-gendered’ and pooled group for the same award. This, of course, means Logan star Hugh Jackman is now up against Split’s James McAvoy and Beauty and the Beast’s leading lady Emma Watson for Best Actor in a movie. We’ll also see The Walking Dead's iconic baseball-bat-wielding baddie Jeffrey Dean Morgan going up against Emilia Clarke from Game Of Thrones and Stranger Things star Millie Bobby Brown.

This year's awards will also incorporate four entirely new categories: Best American Story, Best Tearjerker, Best Host and Best Reality Competition. As the event draws closer, more categories may well be announced – and it certainly looks to be shaping up as one of the most interesting and alternative looks at modern entertainment of recent years.
