This Week In History: July 10 - July 16by

In the first of a regular look back in time at some of the most important and memorable events from history, we’ll be jumping into our One News Page time machine to find out what happened years, decades and centuries ago this week. It’s the start of truly brilliant weather right now, so expect plenty of sporting triumphs – with a few interesting tidbits thrown in from the world of politics, film and more. Strap in and get ready to go back in time!

July 10th 1940 – The Battle of Britain Begins
A poignant first stop as we this week commemorate the 67th anniversary of the RAF’s defense against the German Luftwaffe during the Second World War in skies above England. The campaign would run until October 31st that year, with the British declaring a clear victory – though not without over 4,100 servicepeople from both sides killed or MIA – and with 40,000 civilians losing their lives. Over 1,100 involved in the battle were wounded in action. While the War was far from over, The Battle of Britain is still regarded as a pivotal moment in the fight against Hitler’s Germany.

July 11th 1900 – The First Female Olympic Champion
History was made right at the start of the 20th Century on July 11th 1900, as tennis player Charlotte Cooper emerged as the first female Olympic champion in the sport – and the first female Olympic champion, period.

July 12th 2016 – Sanders Endorses Clinton
In the first of what would be many steps towards the surprise awaiting US voters that November, we only have to go back a year to witness US Senator Bernie Sanders officially endorsing Hillary Clinton for the Democratic Presidential Nomination – effectively ending his run in the race and putting his rival forward against the Republicans’ Donald Trump.

July 13th 1939 – Frank Sinatra Debuts
Recording the old standard ‘High Hopes’ with the Harry James Band 78 years ago, the world witnessed the birth of a legend – Old Blue Eyes himself, Frank Sinatra.

July 14th 2008 – Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Dark Knight’ Premieres
A movie which would arguably set the standard for all Batman material following it, the ground-breaking The Dark Knight premiered in New York nine years ago this week. The Joker would be one of Heath Ledger’s final roles, and arguably and critically his best.

July 15th 1988 – ‘Die Hard’ Released
Still in the movie world, the iconic action staple Die Hard – arguably transforming Bruce Willis into a big screen mainstay – debuted 29 years ago this week. It would also provide the late Alan Rickman with one of his most iconic roles as crime lord Hans Gruber.

July 16th 1969 – Apollo 11 Launched
Our last trip back in time this week saw Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins take to the skies in what would be the first successful trip to the Moon – paving the way for space exploration and research for decades to come.

Stay tuned for more historical nuggets next week!
