This Week In History: October 2nd - October 8thby

Ever wanted to take a trip back in time to sample the highs and lows of years gone by? Sadly, while we may be a few years away from a DeLorean taking us back to the 50s, we at One News Page do at least have our weekly look back at what went down in decades or even centuries past. Let’s strap in and hit that speed barrier to see what history has to offer us in terms of lessons – and more besides – as we take a look at a week in the past.

October 2nd, 1902 – ‘The Tale of Peter Rabbit’ Published
Arguably author Beatrix Potter’s most famous work of children’s literature, the tale of naughty bunny Peter is one that has endured generations of storytelling – and one which is due for a rather well-discussed remake in 2018.

October 3rd, 1995 – OJ Simpson Found Not Guilty of Murder
One of the most controversial and most publicized murder trials of the modern age ends with ex footballer and movie star OJ Simpson walking free – almost 22 years later, he is walking free from prison having served time for armed robbery.

October 4th, 2006 – WikiLeaks Launched
The site that rustled a thousand jimmies – Julian Assange’s controversial whistle-blowing platform has caused international concern and more besides – and, at the time of writing, the activist is still residing in London’s Ecuadorian Embassy, of high interest to US intelligence for sharing secrets.

October 5th, 1962 – Bond and Beatles Debut
In a rare double header, two cultural icons debuted on the world scene 55 years ago this week – as James Bond first hit the big screen in ‘Dr No’, and as The Beatles released their first single, ‘Love Me Do’. The rest, as they say, is history.

October 6th, 1952 – ‘The Mousetrap’ Debuts in London
It’s the West End’s longest-running production – and, to this day, it’s still going! Christie’s Mousetrap celebrates its 65th birthday on the stage this week – and its secrets are still hotly guarded.

October 7th, 1996 – Fox News Launches
It’s famously President Trump’s favorite news network – and it celebrates its 21st birthday this week.

October 8th, 1971 – John Lennon Releases ‘Imagine’
We close the week with another Beatle – as John Lennon released his enormous hit ‘Imagine’ 46 years ago this week. The song would go on to re-release following his tragic death – and it is still regarded by many as the finest pop song ever recorded.

Join us again for another trip down memory lane next week!
