This Week In History: October 16 - October 22by

It’s that time again – it’s not every day that you get to take a step or two back in time, and here at One News Page, we give you the chance to look back at history every single week. Each Monday, we’ll give you the chance to see what went down each week in decades and centuries past. Whether you’re looking to learn something or to marvel at oddities from years gone by, let’s break it all down for you – strap in and get ready to venture into the past…

October 16th, 2004 – Lionel Messi’s League Debut
He’s now regarded as one of the most talented – and most expensive – soccer stars on the planet, and it’s 13 years ago this week that Messi first came to world attention as part of Barcelona’s main squad – aged just 17.

October 17th, 1888 – The First Movie is Patented
Thomas Edison – who else – patents the ‘optical phonograph’ on this day over a century ago – which, of course, helped to spur on moving pictures, or movies, as we now know them.

October 18th, 1931 – Al Capone Convicted
After a career of crime, infamous mobster – possibly the best-known of all time – was finally indicted on grounds of tax evasion. Who would have thought?

October 19th, 2005 – Saddam Hussein Goes on Trial
74 years and one day later, a different kind of criminal goes on trial – as Saddam Hussein faces justice having been found taking refuge in a hole. It’s a trial which would eventually result in the dictator being hanged.

October 20th, 1973 – The Sydney Opera House Opens
It’s perhaps one of Australia’s most famous landmarks – and yet it is only 44 years old this, week, as Queen Elizabeth II first opened the arena over four decades ago.

October 21st, 2014 – Oscar Pistorius Sentenced
In a landmark case, former Paralympic superstar and ‘blade runner’ Oscar Pistorius found himself sentenced to five years in jail for having killed his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp.

October 22nd, 1962 – JFK’s Naval Blockade
An event that would effectively kick-start the Cuban Missile Crisis – John F Kennedy, then-US President, imposed a blockade on Cuba via the Navy – which would, of course, set dominoes rolling for the years to come.

History always has something to teach us – and while not all of it may be useful day to day, we can at least look back at the past with a sort of fondness – even if we weren’t around to appreciate ourselves! Come back next Monday and see what happened in late October in centuries past!
