This week in history: November 6th - November 12thby

With bonfire night out of the way, it’s now time to start looking back on historic events from years, decades and centuries gone by that maybe weren’t so lucky to have a special day allocated. In some cases, there is more emphasis on us learning from such events as opposed to celebrating them! Human history is a patchwork quilt of bizarre twists and turns – and here’s what went down this week in the years gone by!

November 6th, 1860 – Abraham Lincoln Elected President
Honest Abe – inarguably one of the most iconic US Presidents of all time – walked into the White House on this day over 150 years ago. The President is credited with helping to end slavery in the US – and if you don’t know his name, you more than likely know what he looks like! Will we be saying the same about Trump in the year 2200?

November 7th, 1917 – Lenin Takes Russia
In the East, and over 50 years later, Vladimir Lenin and his Bolsheviks stage a successful revolution in Russia – overthrowing the government in place.

November 8th, 2016 – Trump Takes the US
Back to the US again – and it’s a recent historic date that many will remember – as Republican Donald Trump emerges victorious in a ballot that remains controversial a year on – and as the former real estate mogul continues to battle controversy inside and outside the Oval Office.

November 9th, 1799 – Bonaparte Takes France
What is it with leadership and November? Napoleon Bonaparte became France’s dictator over 200 years ago – and he would become a face of many a war to come.

November 10th, 1989 – The Berlin Wall is No More
Coming back to the relative present, East and West Germany finally sought a reunion again as destruction of the infamous Berlin Wall started on this day almost thirty years ago.

November 11th, 1992 – Female Priests Allowed in England
The Church of England made a game-changing move 25 years ago this week – as women were finally allowed to be ordained as priests throughout the country.

November 12th, 1990 – Plans for The Internet Emerge
It’s hard to believe that the internet hasn’t even been with us for 30 years yet – but on this day 27 years ago, Tim Berners-Lee first made his plans for the World Wide Web known to the public.

Join us again next week for some more trips through time – who knows what we’ll discover next?
