WOLE Soyinka may be the first African Nobel laureate, but do not expect him to offer tips on what Singapore should do to bag a Nobel Prize when he holds workshops here next month.

Indeed, the 1986 recipient of the Nobel Prize for Literature is frequently asked that question, which he finds shocking. Addressing this in his memoir, You Must Set Forth At Dawn (2006), the Nigerian wrote: 'Why should one strain for a prize? If it comes, fine; if it doesn't... why should one notice the existence of a prize for anything?'
