Chris Evans returns to station

Chris Evans has returned to his old Virgin Radio offices for the first time since he was fired eight years ago in a storm of publicity.The BBC Radio 2 DJ - who was axed from Virgin Radio in 2001 after missing a series of broadcasts of his breakfast show - said his trip down memory lane to the home of the station, now rebranded Absolute Radio, brought back a deep sense of nostalgia - "and none of it felt bad".Evans, who had once owned the station, said he felt "fine" to be back in the building, telling breakfast host Christian O'Connell: "I've never been back in the building, this is quite incredible."He went on: "I paid for most of the computers and pictures on the walls and things like that ... I used to come in to do the show, and there'd be boxes of new computers in the hallway, and because I owned the station I'd be thinking: 'Do we really need those?'"He joked: "The lift's still as slow as ever".Evans, who will take over Sir Terry Wogan's breakfast show next year, said his appointment to the prized Radio 2 slot was "the only secret I've ever kept". He said he had known for more than six months prior to the announcement being made.Asked how he looked back on the last eight years, Evans said: "It's very colourful, and it's like a movie, and I can actually sit back and enjoy it, you know. At the time I didn't not enjoy it, although I was making a few huge mistakes, there's no doubt about that."
