Profit taking saw London's FTSE 100 Index close 36.7 points lower at 5345.9 after Monday's 14-month high.Miner Lonmin was among the stocks to fall back, down 57p to 1683p, while Barclays dropped 9p to 315p and bank rival HSBC shed 16p to 745p.Inter-dealer broker ICAP was the day's biggest winner, rising 13¾p to 438p after it revealed trading activity had improved in September. Telecoms company Cable & Wireless was up 2½p to 140¾p after saying it aims to demerge its business by March 31, with the two firms to be separately listed.In the FTSE 250, transport firm Arriva added 28p to 486½p as broker Goldman Sachs raised its rating for the stock from sell to buy.Enterprise Inns dived 11¼p to 122½p on news of a 21% dive in annual profits. It expects further pressure in 2010. Shares on European bourses were lower. In France, banks Societe Generale and Credit Agricole were down.The Nikkei 225 in Japan finished the day 61.25 points lower at 9,729.93 as exporters such as PlayStation maker Sony were weighed down by a strong yen.The Dow Jones was lower after a weaker-than-expected gain in US industrial production for October raised questions about the strength of the recovery.
