France scored a contentious extra-time goal to secure a 1-1 draw against Ireland on Wednesday to qualify for the World Cup alongside Portugal, Slovenia, Greece and Algeria.

France was heading to a 1-0 loss and penalty shootout when captain Thierry Henry slapped the ball with his hand to stop it going out of play and again to set it up for a cross that William Gallas headed in to secure the draw.
