AS A CONCEPT, the Miss World contest is as outdated as the soda syphon and vinyl records, but this year’s pageant has been considerably brightened by a catfight which has thrust a British Army soldier into the limelight. Lance Corporal Katrina Hodge will be representing England after the original winner stood down over allegations she was involved in a nightclub brawl with Miss Manchester. Miss Hodge, who has served in Iraq and is due to go to Afghanistan, will be competing against 119 other beauties, including the reigning Miss Scotland, Katharine Brown, a close friend of tennis star Andy Murray. For the first time in 20 years, it might be worth watching.
