SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 News) – President Barack Obama said he will soon decide whether to send additional troops to Afghanistan. A new study released by the Army indicates that the growing intensity of the conflict is taking its toll on U.S. Forces. In eight years of war, many soldiers have served as many as five tours of duty. The war in Afghanistan now eclipses the Revolutionary war and the Vietnam War as the longest in history. The Army’s survey shows morale slipping among U.S. Troops in Afghanistan. In 2007, 10.2 percent of soldiers rated their unit’s morale as high. In 2009 the percent is down to 5.7. The divorce rate is also on the rise, as well as suicide. The report reveals a shortage of mental health professionals on the ground to help. There is also grave concern military morale took another blow after the Fort Hood shooting spree in which 13 people died. Military psychologists are also reporting additional stress for soldiers. They are still waiting for word on how their mission will be redefined.According to the study, morale among U.S. troops in Iraq is actually up since years past, but to combat the problem in Afghanistan the U.S. army officials say they want one mental health professional for every 7 hundred U.S. soldiers on the ground in Afghanistan by next month. It's a goal they say they are on track to meet.
