A southeast Texas industrial disposal facility has suspended its plan to import and incinerate up to 20,000 tons of hazardous waste from Mexico, a company official said. The company, Veolia Environmental Services, dropped its request to the Environmental Protection Agency for a permit to import polychlorinated byphenyls from Mexico and burn them in a plant, said Mitch Osborne, general manager of the plant. The agency had notified Veolia of its intent to approve the permit in March 2008, but the decision stirred controversy. Mr. Osborne cited “economic uncertainty” in abandoning the permit.
