<title>MySpace Signs Deal With Another Music Label</title>
<description>The &quot;virtual fifth label&quot; is now friends with MySpace.  Merlin, an organization that represents independent music companies, has signed a deal with the social network that should nicely complement MySpace's existing partnerships with EMI, Sony, Universal, and Warner.

Merlin's association with indie artists and late arrival to the music scene (it launched in January of 2007) set it apart from the so-called Big Four.  Just the same, Merlin's a major force, with members in more than 25 countries, and names like Cat Power, Tom Waits, and The White Stripes linked with it.

So it's quite noteworthy that, according to Andrew Orlowski, a Merlin spokesman stated, &quot;After more than a year of negotiations, MySpace Music has finally offered Merlin a deal that is acceptable to its members, members who represent 10% of the global music market.&quot;

What's more, &quot;The same eligibility and level of participation will be offered to all independent labels licensing content to MySpace Music.&quot;

Of course, the details of the arrangement haven't yet been made public, which leaves a lot of questions unanswered.  But it looks like MySpace, which acquired Imeem just yesterday and launched MySpace Music Charts the day before, is really on a roll on the music front.

<title>Americans' Social Media Habits Highlight Business Potential</title>
<description>Euro RSCG released some interesting findings from a study exploring the different ways Americans are using social media to &quot;redefine their lives.&quot; The study looked at 1,228 social media users in the United States.

&quot;Word of mouth has always been the most powerful marketing tool; what social media has done is dramatically increase the scale, velocity and immediacy with which people can influence each other and create the biggest revolution to hit our industry since television,&quot; said David Jones, global CEO of Euro RSCG. &quot;One of the interesting findings of the study is that it's the combination of online and offline experiences that creates the biggest impact.&quot;

Other findings include:
- Even though 53.5% of respondents have met new people through electronic media, face-to-face interaction is still the &quot;gold standard&quot;

- Consumers are engaging more in multi-way exchanges of ideas and opinions among consumers and brands

- Consumers are not only move involved with family and friends, but they have increased involvement in political and humanitarian issues.

- 40% agree that social groupings online can be truly social, while only 14% disagree. According to Euro RSCG, figures varied little across age, gender, ethnic, or income groups.
&quot;Online social networking has become part of our culture so quickly, it's easy to forget just how new it is and how much it's a work in progress. People are still experimenting with the different options and finding ways to make it part of their life,&quot; said Marian Salzman, president of Euro RSCG Worldwide PR, North America. &quot;Forget the images of sad antisocial types. Smart consumers are mixing and matching the tools that come available to meet their social needs. Electronic tools are making them even more socially active, just as the telephone did back in the day.&quot;

Perhaps more interesting than the statistics provided by the firm, are the key takeaways it cites. This includes things like the fact that social media is an important consideration for any communications strategy, and the fact that it's impossible to predict how bits of communication will spread across social media.

The firm also says that even though the web is world-wide, its emerging power is hyperlocal. This is because this is the space where online and offline most often meet. That is a key reason why businesses, particularly local businesses should not ignore social media.

<title>Google to Alert Webmasters of New Software Versions</title>
<description>Google is going to start letting webmasters know when the software they run on their site is outdated. Through Webmater Tools, Google will begin alerting users of new versions of software when they are released.

&quot;One of the great things about working at Google is that we get to take advantage of an enormous amount of computing power to do some really cool things,&quot; says Patrick Chapman of Google's Search Quality Team. &quot;One idea we tried out was to let webmasters know about their potentially hackable websites. The initial effort was successful enough that we thought we would take it one step further by expanding our efforts to cover other types of web applications—for example, more content management systems (CMSs), forum/bulletin-board applications, stat-trackers, and so on.&quot;

&quot;This time, however, our goal is not just to isolate vulnerable or hackable software packages, but to also notify webmasters about newer versions of the software packages or plugins they're running on their website,&quot; he continues. &quot;For example, there might be a Drupal module or Joomla extension update available but some folks might not have upgraded.&quot;

One way Google identifies sites that need to be notified is by parsing source code of web pages that it crawls. Content management systems usually include generator meta tags that specify the version number. This helps Google figure out when sites aren't running the latest version.

The company is encouraging developers to use such generator meta tags in their software if they are not already doing so. This, along with Google's efforts, should theoretically keep their users using the most recent versions. That is Google's goal, anyway.

Google says they will begin sending out notifications soon, but doesn't give a more specific time. Do you think this is a good idea?

<title>Facebook Sends Cease And Desist To Friend-Seller</title>
<description>uSocial is a controversial advertising company that specializes in social media.  For a fee, it promises to get stories on the front page of Digg, direct followers to a Twitter account, and/or find someone Facebook fans (among other things).  But Facebook's put at least a temporary stop to the sale of friends.

The BBC reported this afternoon, &quot;Facebook sent Cease and Desist letters to USocial claiming that the way the marketing firm operates violates its rights by sending spam, using web tools to harvest pages, getting login names and by accessing accounts that did not belong to the marketing firm.&quot;

As a result, &quot;USocial defended itself against Facebook's claims, saying that it did not spam users or use web tools to gather information about profiles. . . .  However, in response to the legal letters, USocial said it would delete the login information it had collected and broadly stop offering to sell Facebook friends.&quot;

This is an interesting development insofar as, three months ago, Twitter also tried to crack down on uSocial.  Its back-channel methods apparently didn't succeed, but now that Facebook's established a precedent, we might see another attempt.  Delicious, Digg, and Reddit could well join the fight, too.
Of course, the hubbub around such a scuffle would act as free advertising for uSocial and might spread the notion that these social media sites can be gamed, so it's also possible that absolutely nothing will occur.

<title>The Twilight Saga: New Moon Takes Over Social Media</title>
<description>Shhh, can you hear that? What you're hearing is the collective shrieks from Twihards everywhere as The Twilight Saga: New Moon is upon us. For those of you asking yourself, what is a Twihard? I’ve included the definition below.

twi-hard noun
A serious/obsessive reader of the Twilight Saga by Stephenie Meyer, one leap above Twilighters.

Are you a Twilight fan? Do you plan on seeing the movie? Let us know.

Currently the Twilight Saga is all the rage, and seems to have taken over almost every aspect of social media. If you venture over to MySpace.com you’ll see that the homepage has been New Moonified. It should be noted that New Moon &amp; MySpace seem to share the same demographic, Tweens... so it only makes sense to try and grab those pageviews.

MySpace has been all about some New Moon here lately, as they just hosted an exclusive stream of the red carpet during the films premiere, which pulled in 3 million viewers. Did you watch any of the red carpet stream? Tell us.

Over on Twitter, Twilight holds 3 of the top 10 trending topics including the highly coveted top spot.

If you search for &quot;New Moon&quot; on Twitter it seems like you need to constantly refresh so you can see the hundreds of new Tweets. Below is an interesting graph, which shows the buzz over New Moon, comparing blogs to Twitter. You can obviously see the drastic climb just from last month, as the hype around the movie grew with each day.

YouTube is even trying to cash-in on the New Moon craze by adding a “Twihard” box atop their site that states the following, &quot;The world is gripped by Twilight mania these days and on YouTube that translates into videos that celebrate, discuss and even mock the cultural phenomenon.&quot;

Like I said before, New Moon hits theatres today and is expected to make somewhere between 85 million – 100 million dollars this weekend, and could possibly break some box office records when it’s all said and done. It’s already broken the advance ticket sales record, previously held by Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith. How much do you think New Moon will make when it's all said and done? Tell us.

It'll be interesting to compare New Moon's &quot;social media status&quot; against the next film in the saga when it hits the cinema around this same time next year, to see if it stil has the same amount of hype around it.

Why do you think Twilight is such a huge success? Tell us know your honest opinion.

<title>Microsoft Takes Users Behind Bing</title>
<description>Microsoft has launched a new site for Bing, where users can go to find out the latest features that have been implemented into the search engine (excuse me, &quot;decision engine&quot;). The site's called Behind Bing.

&quot;You can see each feature in action though a screencast, see me talk about why we did it the way we did (for those who like to geek out), and get some drill-down details,&quot; says Bing's Stefan Weitz. &quot;For those of you pressed for time, check out 'Features for You' at the bottom of the site which highlights some features that I thought were especially cool depending on what and where you are.&quot;

Highlighted on the site currently are sections looking at:
- Real-time search
- Bing Local
- Weather/Event results
- Enhanced Results
- Enhanced hover
- Bing for mobile
- Videos
- Bing Travel
- Bing Health
- Visual Search
- Bing Shopping
- Wolfram Alpha
- Search Sharing
- Reference
There are videos and other sections for &quot;explore,&quot; &quot;overview,&quot; and &quot;insight guide.&quot; If you don't regularly keep up with Bing's announcements or search news in general, this should serve as a good place to check out from time to time just to see what the search engine has been up to, and to stay informed about any functionalities that you may have otherwise missed. That will of course require that Microsoft keeps it updated.

On a related note, all of the features that Bing announced last week are supposed to be &quot;100%&quot; live now for all users, but that doesn't seem to be accurate, as I am not able to access some of the new stuff yet.

<title>Ballmer Gives Shareholders - and Dell - Cause for Optimism</title>
<description>The early indicators that Windows 7 is doing well seem to be piling up. CEO Steve Ballmer gave that perception a boost at the company's annual shareholders meeting on Thursday, announcing that Microsoft &quot;has already sold twice as many units of Windows 7 than any other operating system ever launched in a comparable time.&quot; Do the early numbers indicate that Windows 7 may be strong enough to cheer the shareholders of other companies -- namely, battered computer OEMs like Dell?

<title>Barnes &amp; Noble Says No Nook For Holidays</title>
<description>Barnes &amp; Noble said today it has sold out of its new nook e-reader due to high demand and shipments will not arrive in time for Christmas.

“nook continues to be the fastest-selling product at Barnes &amp; Noble, and pre-orders have continued to exceed our expectations,” Barnes &amp; Noble said on its eReading blog.

“While we increased production based on the high consumer interest, we’ve sold out of our initial nook allotment available for delivery before the holidays.”

Barnes &amp; Noble said those ordering a nook beginning today should expect their device to begin shipping the week of January 4, 2010. For customers purchasing nooks as holidays gifts, the bookseller has created a holiday certificate, noting an expected January ship date.

The announcement by Barnes &amp; Noble comes a day after Sony said its new electronic reader, the Reader Daily Edition would experience shipping delays. Sony said pre-orders for its latest e-reader would ship between December 18 and January 8, and “an actual delivery date cannot be guaranteed.”

Sony’s Reader Daily Edition sells for $399 while Barnes &amp; Noble’s nook is available for $259.

Barnes &amp; Noble said it is working to increase the supply of its nook in the coming year. “We continue to ramp up nook supply to meet the demand in the New Year,” the company said.

“We’re committed to providing timely updates to our customers on expected nook availability and will do so through in-store, online and our direct-to-customer communications throughout the holiday season.”

<title>Bebo May Beat Retreat From Australia</title>
<description>Sometimes you just have to know when to call it quits, and a new report indicates that Bebo has decided now's the time to cut its losses in Australia.  Bebo is supposed to end its operations in the country before the end of the year.

Paul McIntyre, who was the first to report this potential move, noted today that nothing official's been announced.  He then continued, &quot;However, Bebo has already started informing Australian partners of its exit, which is due in part to Facebook.&quot;

And Facebook's growth in Australia has indeed been phenomenal.  A director of analytics at Nielsen told McIntyre that Australian Internet users are dedicating about 30 percent of their online hours to Facebook, leading the firm to divide things into &quot;Facebook Time&quot; and &quot;Non Facebook Time.&quot;

By comparison, recent Hitwise stats show that Facebook receives about one-fourth of all U.S. page views, and one-seventh of all UK page views.

So it's quite plausible that Bebo will exit Australia, a market in which its performance has been substandard.  This would represent a significant loss for AOL, though, which paid $850 million for Bebo last year.

<title>If You Care About Search, You Must Care About Social Media</title>
<description>All of the search engines are rushing to incorporate more social media elements into their interfaces. Examples of this are evident in things like Google and Bing's deals with Twitter and Facebook. You can see it in Yahoo's new Twitter tab for news results. You can see it in Google's Social Search lab. Really you can see it in everyday search results.

A lot of Internet users spend a great deal of their time socializing or using social media sites in one way or another, whether that is to connect with others or simply to obtain information. Information is a key component of social media that often takes a backseat to communication in discussion of social media tools.

The fact of the matter is that more and more people are getting more and more of their information from social sites. That could be in the form of following a news publication on Twitter, following company updates on a blog or a Facebook page, or something as simple as a friend sharing a link.

Given that people are getting more info from social media sites, of course search engines want a piece of that, because their whole reason for existence is naturally to help users find what they are looking for on the web.

So, it stands to reason that if you want people to find information that you are producing, it can help a great deal to publish information and participate in conversations on social media sites. Never mind that users of those particular sites will have access to it. The general public will as well by way of search, regardless of whether or not they are a part of any particular community.

In an interview with WebProNews, Vanessa Fox, who used to work for Google, talked about reasons that businesses should be thinking about social media with regards to search. It's about visibility. If you are having discussions out there about relevant topics, they could appear in search results not only in real-time search, but further down the road as well.

In other words, if you have a conversation with a peer on Twitter about some topic related to your niche, there is a good chance the resulting tweets of that conversation could appear in search results for that topic on Google, even a year from now, if that tweet happens to be relevant enough. That's just an example (note: it's hard to say at this point, just how tweets will impact search once the Google-Twitter deal starts showing results).

There are a variety of ways in which a social campaign can contribute to your performance in search engines, regardless of what these recent deals might produce. Like Lee Odden of Top Rank Online Marketing recently discussed with WebProNews, you can optimize your social content.

The web went blog crazy a few years back. Marketers found out that blogs were great for achieving search engine visibility because of the content and links that can come from them. It's not that different with social media now. The web has largely moved into a social media-heavy phase, as I'm sure you've noticed. Search engines obviously know this and care about it.

As Fox says in her interview, it's getting to the point where more businesses are starting to realize that they need to be involved with social media. However, surveys still frequently suggest that many are reluctant, and even if they do engage to some extent, they are still holding back, and not reaching the potential they could be.

You know search is important to marketing on the web. Really, it's important to marketing, period. If you operate on the web or off, your customers are on still online, as Fox noted. Social media is growing increasingly important to search. And search is only one aspect of online marketing. There are many more benefits to social media than that.

<title>Google Doesn't Know if Your Site is in the Cloud</title>
<description>Google's Matt Cutts discussed how the search engine handles sites that that are &quot;in the cloud&quot; with regards to how listings are affected. Matt's explanation was a response to the following user-submitted question:

Can moving my website to &quot;the cloud&quot; harm my listings? Say my server's in Germany and I move the website to Google's App Engine or Amazon S3. Does this harm my listings for German results - or is it enough to set the &quot;geographic target&quot; in GWT to Germany?

Matt broke the question down into separate parts to answer them. First, he took on the part about moving a site to &quot;the cloud&quot; harming the users' listings. His answer for this is basically that Google doesn't even know if your site is in the cloud, so it can't use that information to affect listings.

&quot;We don't know what is happening on the side of your web server. Your web server could be running Perl, PHP, Python, or Ruby on Rails,&quot; said Cutts. &quot;All we know is what the web server returns. So your web server could be running code that would go talk to Amazon's cloud or Appspot or anywhere else in the cloud, but we wouldn't even know that. We don't even know whether a page is dynamically created or statically created. All we know is what the web server sends back.&quot;

He says if your site is talking to the cloud behind the scenes, there is now way for any search engine or bot to know about that. Watch the video above to hear Matt's explanation for the second part of the user's question.

<title>Google Enhances Real Estate Search</title>
<description>Google has added some new real estate search features to Google Maps. Earlier this year, Google expanded this functionality by letting you select &quot;real estate&quot; from the &quot;more&quot; menu. Now you can just search for &quot;real estate&quot; or other real estate-related geographical queries and get listings.

&quot;The idea is to make it really easy for you guys - you tell us what you want, and we get it back to you! Of course, we'll continue to work to return the best results for all your Google Maps queries, whether you're looking for local businesses, geographic features, or your perfect home,&quot; Google says in an announcement on its Australian blog.

Are you familiar with Google's Place Pages? These are pages for businesses that Google creates for listings in Google Maps. They launched this feature earlier this year also. Now real estate listings have their own place pages as well.

&quot;Now clicking the 'more info' link next to a listing takes you to a faster, easier-to-read page that gives you all of the information we have about a listing: photos, inspection times, videos, details, a Street View preview and nearby public transit information if available, allowing you to quickly find the listing you want and click through to the sources of the listing,&quot; explains Google.

As Matt McGee at Search Engine Land points out, Google has shown individual property info for a while now, but this provides a much more user-friendly approach. Google Maps may start to be considered the place to go to find real estate online.
