Transcript: 2016 brings over 1,000 hit-and-runs in Pueblo

hit and runs in pueblo are on the rise. the pueblo police department reports there were more than 1-thousand hit and run incidents in 2016. which is almost three a day. krdo newschannel 13's colleen sikora joins us live in pueblo. colleen. you spoke with drivers and police about the new numbers. roll animation people i spoke with today were shocked to find out that hit and runs have increased 24 percent since 2014. and they wanted to know why. nats cars on roads drivers. :28 it's kinda disturbing. shocked. surprise and followed by frustration. learning there were 1,034 hit and run accidents in pueblo in 2016. 2:04 i can't imagine ever hitting somebody and leaving the scene so it says a lot about who we are as a nation and as a people. and 1034. a 24 percent increase since 2014. nats cars driving sgt. eric gonzales with the pueblo police department says there's a number of reasons drivers won't stop when they hit another car. 1:15 it has to do with no insurance, no drivers license and sometimes even intoxication either by alcohol or drugs colleen stand up and only about 30 percent of those hit and run cases have been closed. because of the lack of information. 3:43 it's just up to the officers who just go off of the word of the one driver who's left and when we don't have anything else to go off of that makes it a little more difficult for us to solve those hit and run accidents. police are still looking for mariah apodoaca. suspected for hitting and injuring a man riding his bike last summer. and leaving the scene. nats as for why the increase is occurring. sgt. gonzales can only speculate. 4:17 because of the fact that those numbers have increased over the last two years since marijuana has become legal, it kind of points that direction. nats cars driving.. chad pfeif beleves if voters would have approved more cops onto the street. it may have helped. 6:01 there's not as many police on the road, then there's more apt for people to hit it and be like, 'there's no cops around here, i'm going to take off.' the couple. will continue to be careful around town. stephanie pfeif it's not like we can live in a community where you can walk or bike everywhere. hoping to not be apart of the 1, 034. if you're involved in a hit and run. police suggest using your phone to capture license plate numbers, the car and driver . and getting witness information may help police catch the person who hit you. live in pueblo cs krdo nc 13 a car driving on the northeast side
