up....a look at the increased patrols by the department of public safety. plus....a day in the life of a volunteer firefighter and the toll it takes to keep you safe. but first.....what you need to know before you head out on the lake. jon good evening, i'm jon hansen. terri has the night off. the hot temperatures that heidi just mentioned may have you making plans to head to the lake. courtney from sat down with marine safety officers to see how they're preparing for the surge of visitors. i spent most the day out on the boat with lpd their really just out patrolling making sure everyone stays safe for the fourth of july sgt. jason lewis were really just there to make sure everybody enjoys the lake and doesn't have any accidents game wardens, garza county sheriff's officers and lubbock police all patrol lake alan henry. sergeant jason lewis with lpd says they do a lot more than write tickets. really were just here to help to make sure everybody has a good weekend, its funny these times can be the very best of your lives and the best memories or they could be the worst where people fall off and drown and they get too intoxicated or you grow old saying these were the best of my life and we want that their warning people of the consequences of drinking and boating. you stand the chance of getting a bwi if your moving a vessel over the legal limit just like when your operating a vehicle. everybody comes down to the lake and they wanna have a good time and we want you to have a good time we know people are going to consume alcohol and thats what we want but you just have to do it responsibly he says they also see several cases of dehydration have a plan, have plenty of food and water its going to be really hot have more than just alcohol on your boat, make sure you have plenty of water to make things go smoothly boaters should go through a check list before coming to the lake be prepared please, before you take off from home think about everything you will need make sure you have what you need once you get down to the lake make sure your boat is full of gas make sure you have proper safety equipment , make sure your boat runs, especially if this is the first time your taking it out this year lpd suggests everyone follows the guidelines and keeps an eye out for other boaters on the water so you stay safe not only this fourth of july but during the whole boating season. at lake allen henry, im courtney fromm klbk news. jon anyone born after september first 19-93, needs to make sure they take the boater's safety class online prior to operating a boat.... or you could receive a ticket. jon regardless of if you're going to the lake.....lubbock e-m-s and fire department officials say high temepratures are the number one cause of weather related fatalities each year. emergency crews have responded to 20-heat related calls so far this summer....but
