than a month on august 21th you have the chance to see something that hasn't been seen in nearly a century. our jacie brianne has details on what's being dubbed 'the great american eclipse' and how your family can safely watch. robert morehead, instructor and director of preston gott observatory "i literally have been waiting for this my entire life, like since i was a little kid, 2017 be there so i'm very excited." the solar eclipse will be the first total eclipse viewable across the continental united states... robert morehead, instructor and director of preston gott observatory "the path of totality is going from oregon all the way across to south carolina hitting a bunch of states in the middle like nebreska, idaho, illinios and many others. this has become a big deal because people have been waiting for this.

" while the event is beautiful you also want to make sure you're eyes are properly protected... robert morehead, instructor and director of preston gott observatory "you want to make sure you use specially designed filters, you can't just use regular sunglasses cause even though you may be comfortable, you may able to look at the sun and not squint, you can still be damaging your eye.

" and there are other various ways that you can view the eclipse with things found right in your home... robert morehead, instructor and director of preston gott observatory "you can use indirect methods to look at the eclipse too. one of the easiest things to do is just to take a piece of cardboard, poke a hole in the and project the image of the sun onto another piece of cardboard and you'll see the eclipse just fine." the best view that lubbock is going to have is at 12:57pm when the moon will block 72-percent of the sun's surface. so it's no surprise that there will be various viewing parties... including one at the science spectrum... alana baliga, education coordinator at the science spectrum "as we're waiting for that peak eclipse to be happening we're going to be having hands on acitivites, also looking at different ways to safely view the solar eclipse but we will have some crafts and hands on activities where you can actually see what's happening and how the moon and the earth and the sun all interact to cause that eclipse that we'll be seeing." jacie brianne klbk news terri the patterson branch of jacie brianne klbk news terri the patterson branch of the lubbock public library is also hosting a watch party where they will be handing
