representative steve cohen ... says he's moving forward to impeach president trump over his charlottesville response! good evening. i'm katina rankin. brandon: and! i'm brandon artiles. local 24's brad broders was with congressman cohen when he made the announcement. brad is live outside the federal building in downtown memphis. brad ... any chance this proposal goes anywhere? brad: brandon and katina - with republicans controlling the house and senate - this president impeachment legislation proposal appears dead on arrival in the nation's capitol - even though congressman cohen said it still symbolizes a vote of no confidence. president trump supporters - meanwhile - say this is nothing more than a publicity stunt. brad broders/reporting: elaine ervin/donald trump supporter "it's going nowhere. he's making an idiot of himself." president trump supporter elaine ervin of collierville didn't hide her displeasure - when she learned democratic congressman steve cohen of memphis plans to introduce articles of impeachment against the commander in chief next month. elaine ervin/donald trump supporter "i'm very disappointed that he's working for personal party politics rather than for the unity of our country." but congressman cohen said it's for the 'conscience' of country as reason why he'll request impeachment hearings of president trump when congress returns to washington next month. rep. steve cohen/ memphis "he doesn't understand america, he doesn't his job as president. he's morally, ethically intellectually incapable of being president." representative cohen said there's grounds for possible 'high crimes and misdemeanors' required for impeaching president - including possible obstruction of justice tied to the russia investigation - and this week - describing some neo-nazis and white supremacists in virginia as 'fine people'. representative cohen is jewish - and represents a predominantly african-american distirct. rep. steve cohen/ memphis "it's the antithesis of american values it's abhorrent to me and it was the last step." brad: again - this proposal by congressman cohen of impeaching president trump - right now - is a longshot. the house judiciary committee chairman - a republican - would have to o-k impeachment hearings - and all house democrats and 24 republicans would then need to vote for impeachment. it then would require a two thirds vote in the u-s senate for president trump to be removed from office. reporting live in downtown memphis - brad broders - local 24 news. brandon: congressman cohen asked a republican to stand up! and ... it appears ... senator bob corker has accepted the challenge... he had strong words tonight for president trump while at a rotary club meeting in chattanooga. sen. bob corker/ tennessee: "the president has not yet been able to demonstrate the stability nor some of the competence that he needs to demonstrate in order to be successful.
