pavlovsky. thank you for joining us. mike hoey is off tonight. on to your top story now...is your local drinking water safe? eyewitness news reporter jamie deline joins us now with a closer look as to why this question is floating near.
" assemblyman anthony brindisi is concerned about carcinogens in our local water.
"" what we see here is cool clear refreshing water, but is it?
" that is the question many are asking, after the environmental working group declaired high amounts of chlorophorm and other toxins were discovered in our local water source.
" what they found here locally with the mohawk valley water authority is that there are several chemicals used in the treatment process, that are higher than our state and national averages, and specifically what these chemicals do is they have the ability to cause cancer and difficulty with pregnancy."the assemblyman is urging for more research to be conducted." i am asking the state and local department of environmental concervation in the federal environmental protection agency to independently test our local water to find out if these numbers are accurate." accoriding the the mohawk valley water authority, every water source in the state is unique..... and therefore, they are not always treated same, which can result in differing chemical levels when water sources are compared. the mohawk valley water authority says there is no need for worry about our water locally., patrick becher, mohawk valley water authority "the federal government with all of the advice that they recieve from the medical association and all the other agency's is saying that our water is safe. and we believe that it is 100 percent safe.
" after looking at the environmental working group's website, besh-er says the group seems to have an alteriative motive for producing the report.
" unfortunately, the report by the environmental working group is highly sensationalized. in some respects, it is a scare tactic. for example they promote the sale of water filtration systems on their own website. they provide ratings for water filtration systems and according to our research, they receive a sale of those things.
" for now, people who no longer feel comfortable drinking the water, can either purchase waterbottles or use filtered water. reporting in utica, jamie deline eyewitness news.
