Transcript: Harvard Rescinds Chelsea Manning's Visiting Fellow Invite, Calls It a 'Mistake'
After Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government had asked ex-military intelligence analyst and leaker Chelsea Manning to be a visiting fellow, her invitation was rescinded.
The Washington Post says that the school faced backlash about having Manning as a fellow including CIA director Mike Pompeo who bailed on a Harvard speech following the announcement.
The school's dean wrote in a 700 word statement, “I now think that designating Chelsea Manning as a Visiting Fellow was a mistake, for which I accept responsibility.” The school says Manning’s invite was rescinded because many people view the “Visiting Fellow title as honorific” and they didn’t intend to honor Manning or her deeds in any way.
Manning posted a response on Twitter, saying “Honored to be 1st disinvited trans woman visiting @harvard fellow they chill marginalized voices under @cia pressure” The decision to pull Manning came just after Pompeo withdrew from an appearance at the Kennedy School and wrote a letter to event organizers calling Manning an “American traitor”.
Pompeo also applauded former CIA deputy director mike morell’s decision to resign as a senior fellow at the school.
