tonight at five - explosive allegations surrounding senate candidate roy moore - and a claim of an attempted sexual encounter... this all from the washington post tonight... thanks for joing us, i'm dan shaffer. and i'm demetria mcclenton. the post -- writes a woman by the name of leigh corfman -- was 14-years-old -- when a then 32-year-old roy moore met her outside an etowah county courtroom. corfman claims moore told her mother he'd watch her while she went in to court-- that's when he asked for her phone number. in the week that followed-- the post writes corfman and moore met twice-- both times driving to his house-- where on the first visit he kissed her -- and the second-- he took off her shirt-- and touched her-- while he guided her hand to touch him. corfman did tell the post-- moore did take her home when she asked. tonight-- the chairperson for roy moore's campaign is responding... bill armstead said in part - quote-- "judge roy moore ha endured the most outlandish attacks on any candidate in the modern political arena, but this story in today's washington post alleging sexual impropriety takes the cake.national liberal organizations know their chosen candidate doug jones is in a death spiral, and this is their last ditch hail ry." and today some of our local politicians e weighing in on the allegations... waay 31's charlisa gordon spoke to huntsville mayor and gubernatorial candidate tommy battle. charlisa what is the mayor's take on this developing story? well dan and demeta...the news broke during the huntsville state of the city address and immediately after the address we asked the mayor about those allegation. just minutes after delivering his state of the city speech in front of a sold out crowd mayor battle was well aware of sexual abuse allegations against moore and didn't shy away from addressing it. a candidate for office himself...battle would not say if he was or did endorse roy moore for the senate seat. battle...however...was adamant that he would support the candidate of the republican party whoever it maybe.
"as a republican running fo governor i will support the person who was chosen by the republican party. that being said, a report just came outnd that report if true, is one that nobody who has done what that report says should be a us senator." it's not just mayor battle speaking out.senator richard shelby says "if that' true, i don't believe there'd be any place for him in the united states senate" senate majority leader mitch mcconnell also stated "if these allegations are true, he must step aside" reporting live charlisa gordon waay 31 news and alabama's special senate election is just about a month away. moore will face off against democrat doug jones.
