erin davisson >> good evening and thank you for joining us for this local 5 veteran special. >> tonight is a tribute to all of the service men and women who are serving and have served our great country. >> and to those serving abroad and serving here at home. we start our program that telling you all across this country today, special ceremonies are being held to honor our military service men and women. >> the lightling of the christmas tree in hudini plaza. >> that is where we find local 5 lisa live for light-up night. lisa and melane >> hi, erin and tom. oh, my gosh, the crowd here is excited. this is the start of the holidays here in appleton. they've already turned off the lights with exception of the ones on us. >> tomorrow is veterans day. jose is with us today. thank you for your service. tell us briefly where you served. >> i was in the air force for ten years. i live right down the street actually. >> jose, tell us a little bit. we're going into veterans day tomorrow, we're starting the holiday season here. talk about the sacrifice that really comes to light during the holiday season, a lot of people, like you, spending time away from family and loved ones. >> the first thing that comes to my mind is my younger brother. my younger brother is still in the service. i was in the service until 2007. he still serves. he spends a lot of time away during the holidays. he always knows that he's in our hearts and minds always. that's what veterans means to us is thinking about my younger brother. >> the company you work for does a great job of giving back to the community all throughout the year. tell us about their role. >> we have product here, jake, president of family care is back there somewhere. you mentioned about the role that we have with veterans. kimberly-clark. constantly giving back to the community. >> we got to do this, we're lighting the tree up. it's ready, guys. tom and erin, counting it down here live in appleton, the official kickoff to the holidays in the fox cities, get ready to light up night behind us. there it is. take a look. what a beautiful tree. and even a little bit of snow. i don't know that that was in the forecast. but we'll send it back to you. >> great. all right. thank you. mayor in the background there. big night down in appleton. across the country and right here in northest wisconsin school districts held veterans day ceremonies. >> einstein middle school has put out a special program for nearly 20 years. students, faculty and veterans headed to the gym for an assembly packed with tributes to u.s. veterans. >> green bay police officers were serving up lunch at veterans manor in green bay earlier today. lunch was sponsored by ch. >> in the village of denmark, the high school ceremony included patriotic songs from the school's band and chorus chorus. this is the fifth year that local 5 has presented this veterans day special newscast. >> it's the fifth year we've been lucky enough to have the green bay vietnam veterans of america. honor guard be a part of the broadcast with their honor ceremony. >> on command. ready. aim. fire. ready. aim. fire. ready. aim. fire. present. ? ? ? ? ? ? ? >> and a big thank you again to the green bay vietnam veterans of america honor guard being part of an our special broadcast again. several sailors were in northeast wisconsin for navy week. on this veteran's day, we decided to catch up with them back in japan, aboard their ship, to ask them how veterans day affected their decision to join the navy. >> my favorite part about serving aboard uss green bay is serving with the dedicated professionals, men and women who execute the mission day in and day out. you know what else i love about serving aboard the uss green bay, the fact that we are named after the finest city, green bay, wisconsin. >> captain bailly, his career was influenced early on. >> my grandfather served in world war ii. i have a cousin who served in vietnam. unfortunately he did not come home. he served as a helicopter pilot. >> walker does too. but he's not the first one in his family to wear the navy uniform. >> i have a lot of veterans in my family, my great grandfather, he was in the navy. so that inspired me to join the navy. >> command master chief david robinson has many family members. he takes service very seriously. >> i don't take this lightly. being a service member. but they represent it well and made me want to join and be a part of this great service. >> seaman amber anderson is from melrose wisconsin. amber said it's not just about serving her country, she enlisted because of her cousin. >> she is a nurse in the army. i remember growing up, she was a strong woman and i wanted to be just like her. >> we want to thank the american forces network for working with us to shoot the interviews and video for that story. >> big happy birthday goes out to the u.s. marine corps, as they celebrate 242 years. happy birthday. well, it's a tradition that's been done for years. >> coming up, high school students lay wreaths on veterans's graves at the fort howard cemetery. stay with us.
