Theodore Edgar McCarrick: 20th and 21st-century American Catholic archbishop, former cardinal
Theodore Edgar McCarrick is a laicized American bishop, former prelate and former cardinal of the Catholic Church. Ordained in 1958, he became an auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of New York in 1977, then became bishop of the Diocese of Metuchen, New Jersey in 1981. From 1986-2000, he was Archbishop of Newark. He became a cardinal in February 2001 and served as Archbishop of Washington, D.C. from 2001 to 2006. McCarrick retired in 2006 at the customary age of 75 but continued to be a prominent figure in the church well into the 2010s, remaining a globe-trotting diplomat on behalf of the Vatican and occasionally the U.S. State Department.
