John Bercow accused of calling Andrea Leadsom a 'stupid woman'

City A.M. Friday, 18 May 2018 ()
John Bercow accused of calling Andrea Leadsom a 'stupid woman'Speaker John Bercow has been accused of calling Commons Leader Andrea Leadsom a “stupid woman” under his breath on Wednesday.

As reported by the Telegraph, Bercow also called Leadsom “f***ing useless” following Prime Minister's questions on Wednesday.

The comments reportedly came after Nick Brown, Labour’s chief whip, had complained that the Tories were taking up too much time on government business, leaving little time for debate.

The Speaker’s office admitted that “strong and differing views were expressed” on Wednesday, but did not deny the allegations outright.

“Wednesday was an unusual and controversial day in how business was handled in the House by the government,” a spokeswoman for the Speaker’s Office said.

“And some strong and differing views were expressed on all sides on the subject.”

The statement also said that Bercow “treats his colleagues with respect and strives at every turn to facilitate the House of Commons."

The allegations may put further pressure on Bercow to resign in the wake of bullying accusations from former staff members, which he has denied.
