Donald Trump says he'll invite Vladimir Putin to Washington this year
Friday, 20 July 2018
Donald Trump has said he will meet with Vladimir Putin again later this year, and has extended an invitation for the Russian President to visit the US.
It follows a controversial meeting between the two men in Helsinki, which included a private discussion attended only by a translator.
Trump caused backlash following the summit when he said that he did not see any reason why it "would" be Russia that had interfered with the 2016 election, despite the findings of the Mueller probe.
He later rowed back on those comments, clarifying that he meant to say he didn't see any reason why it "wouldn't" be Russia.
Putin also admitted during the meeting that he had wanted Trump to win the 2016 presidential race.
The White House confirmed yesterday that Trump has asked his national security adviser to invite Putin to Washington this Autumn.
Trump then took to Twitter to say he looked forward to meeting with the Russian leader again.
