KFC – Kentucky Fried Chicken – is one of the best-known and most-loved fast food chains in the world, bar none – and it comes as no surprise that chicken lovers from all over the globe flock to enjoy their unique herbs and spices, as they’re advertised – however, UK chicken eaters have this week faced something of a nightmare, forcing them to abandon their regular mega buckets in favor of an alternative. February 2018 will likely go down in the memory of many – drumstick gobblers in particular – as the pinnacle of what’s being called the KFC chicken crisis.
What do you expect from a KFC? Chicken – that much is obvious! However, around 575 stores were forced to close this week as the chain had bizarrely run out of meat to serve – meaning that staff were effectively given time off and, for those looking for a tasty treat in the form of a bucket of fried bird, it meant going without dinner altogether! It’s thought that an availability of meat generally isn’t to blame – but operational and delivery issues, which seem to have been sparked or initiated thanks to a recent switch from the brand’s delivery operation. The issue has escalated to the extent that there is now a dedicated page set up on the brand’s website to allow chicken fans to find their nearest outlet which remains open despite the shortage!

The UK’s KFC problems are thought to stem from a recent move of delivery courier from Bidvest to DHL – which some experts have advised was a move that should not have been made. The GMB Union in particular spoke out against the move, advising through national officer Mick Rix that “KFC are left with hundreds of restaurants closed while DHL try and run the whole operation out of one distribution center. Three weeks ago, KFC knew they had made a terrible mistake – but by then, it was too late.”
“Bidvest are specialists – a food distribution firm with years of experience. DHL are scratching around for any work they can get – and undercut them,” commented Rix. It’s thought that the overall cost for the chain during this crisis could rise into the millions – but as many branches are franchised out, this remains only an estimate at this time. It’s thought that the amount of stores affected are now decreasing – but for KFC fans throughout Britain, it could mean days – or even weeks – before they get to tuck in again.
