As the Harvey Weinstein saga continues to open old secrets and allow Hollywood to bear up and witness some of its most regrettable moments behind the scenes, more people are coming forward to make allegations against some of the biggest names in the business. With Weinstein yet to face charges as a case builds both in the US ▶ and the UK ▶, it has this week been actor and former theatre director Kevin Spacey who has faced the full force of emerging allegations ▶ with regard to inappropriate sexual activity.
Anthony Rapp led allegations against Spacey in an interview ▶ having stated that the Usual Suspects and House of Cards star had attempted to ‘seduce’ him in 1986, when he was a minor of 14 years of age. Spacey took to publicly address the issue by apologizing and stating that he had no memory of the incident. High profile members of the gay community, however, have responded in disgust at the actor’s decision to come out as homosexual at the same time as addressing the allegations made of him – an issue which has been reverberating in the media and online since earlier this week.
It doesn’t seem that such allegations are to fizzle out any time soon, however, as more appear to have come forward to allege inappropriate advances ▶ made by Spacey across the years. Among them include director Tony Montana, who alleges that he sought help for PTSD as a result of Spacey having ‘forcefully’ fondled him in a bar in 2003. Another is actor Roberto Cavazos, who took part in plays at London’s Old Vic theatre when Spacey was artistic director there. Publicly advising of incidents that occurred there some years ago, the actor added on Facebook that “There are a lot of us who have a ‘Kevin Spacey story’”.
At the time of writing, Spacey’s representatives have been contacted with regard to emerging allegations – but damage is already being felt. The star has been dropped as the recipient of an Emmy award ▶ which was due to be offered to Spacey as part of a special recognition in December. Alongside this, reports were announced that House of Cards would be ending over at Netflix – though this was already the case before these allegations broke. It will remain to be seen quite where these allegations lead – and if rumors surrounding the actor dating back years will have any founding. As always, it is worth keeping an eye on the newsreel – in a time when Hollywood seems to be ready to come clean about much of its seemingly murky underbelly ▶.
