From Action Figures to… Cereal? What Funko's Up to Next

From Action Figures to… Cereal? What Funko's Up to Nextby 👨‍💻 Graham Pierrepoint

Toy collectors of a certain age may well be aware of a little firm known as Funko, who have been producing collectable miniature figurines of some of the world’s best-loved TV, movie and comic characters for several years now. Funko POP! figures appear in similar moulds but are unmistakably based on a number of popular live action and cartoon properties. Everyone from Bugs Bunny to the Xenomorphs from Alien, from Donald Trump to Freddy Krueger, and from Queen Elizabeth II to Sharknado have been immortalized – and it seems that there is no stopping the toy train, as nostalgia continues to bubble up as a very marketable commodity.

Funko is therefore placing more eggs in a new basket by monopolizing on the nostalgic breakfast cereals of old – many of us will remember a time when we were able to get plastic toys and games free with our breakfast cereals – things have changed slightly since then (and even I, the writer of this article, remember even a time when PC games were being offered out with every box), and Funko seems keen to drum up their own sugary morning treats to help put forward a new range of toys. Funko’s Michael Becker – who founded the collectable toy empire – has reportedly shared a sneak peek at the company’s cereal range, which will be arriving on shelves for around $7.99 per box this June.

Popular characters from years gone by such as Beetlejuice, Wonder Woman, Freddy Krueger, Elvira and He-Man will be getting their own themed cereals – completely edible and not plastic as you may expect! They’ll come packaged with a miniature Funko toy – bringing together a current trend for collecting nostalgic toys and characters from years gone by alongside a rising taste for unique and interesting cereal treats. Becker is keen to capture a period of his youth that many of us can relate to. “It’s just one more of those feel-good Funko items,” the CEO advised of his new line. “I used to watch cartoons on Saturday mornings while I was eating cereal.”

The days of Saturday morning cartoons may be over – but Funko appears to be digging deeper into our pop culture past with cereals and more themed toys that certain collectors are almost certain to go gooey for – just don’t let that cereal sit in milk for too long or it’ll go gooey too!
