Get Ready to Return to Middle Earth – There’s a New Lord of the Rings Book Comingby

JRR Tolkien, inarguably one of the founding fathers of modern fantasy (at least on the written fiction side of things), may not be with us any more – but his legacy has seen an incredible tribute and revival over the past two decades alone. His original Lord of the Rings trilogy, brought to life by Peter Jackson in the early 00s, continues to be revered – to the extent that Amazon are set to produce an interpretation of his stories through a TV series that will be the most expensive small screen production of all time. Beyond this, we’ve seen a movie trilogy of his Hobbit books take the big screen by storm, too – and if you thought Tolkien’s demise was the end of everything Hobbit-related, you’d be mistaken.

The author’s son, Christopher Tolkien, has been working hard to bring together manuscripts and plans left by his late father to piece together an entirely new adventure in Middle Earth. Rather than focus on Frodo or Bilbo Baggins, the new story, entitled The Fall of Gondolin, will take place many years before the popular trilogy, and will offer concrete details on the battle between Morgoth and Tuor – both names of which should already be fairly recognizable to hardcore Tolkien readers. Details of these battles have already been discussed in Tolkien’s The Silmarillion – but readers will finally be able to learn more about the fighting that snowballed into the events we all know and love from Bilbo and Frodo’s various adventures. Certainly, before A Song of Ice and Fire, Middle Earth was the complex world that fantasy fans flocked to – and still do!

Christopher Tolkien’s work on these remaining manuscripts has come as a pleasant surprise for Lord of the Rings fans as it was presumed that, at the age of 93, he had ceased to work on the manuscripts his author father left behind – not so, however, despite Tolkien having advised in his last adaptation (Beren and Luthien) that said tome would be his last. Certainly, it seems that Tolkien Sr had more than plenty to talk about when it came to the wonderful world he created – and his legacy, characters and tales will live on through adaptations on page and on screen. There’s no word on exactly when the Amazon series will officially debut – but you’ll be able to purchase The Fall of Gondolin from August 30th this year.
