The Latest Venom Trailer Lands – What's the Reception?by 👨‍💻 Graham Pierrepoint

Getting your comic book movie trailer noticed this week – when a certain film about a war for infinity stones is due to cascade across theaters worldwide – is perhaps something of a brave task. However, the choice to launch our first full, satisfying look at Tom Hardy as Venom is perhaps a cunning one indeed. There has been considerable buzz about quite what Sony Pictures will do with the iconic Spider-Man villain, especially considering that Spidey is owned and used to full effect by Marvel Studios – the character of Eddie Brock and the fearsome Venom symbiote are one of surprisingly many characters that haven’t been snapped up by Disney for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In fact, the last time we saw Venom at all on the big screen was relatively briefly in Spider-Man 3 – back when Tobey Maguire still played Peter Parker. Therefore, there’s hardly any surprise as to why there’s been so much interest with regard to what Sony aim to do here.

Venom is due for release later this fall and aims to set up an origin story for what the trailer is referring to as an ‘anti-hero’ – Eddie Brock, a journalist, finds himself becoming the host body for Venom – an experimental symbiote developed by the shady Life Foundation, which the journalist was investigating. Hardy takes the lead role in a movie which, for the first time, will put a supervillain in the front seat – though some people have reacted negatively to the tagline referring to an ‘anti-hero’ – as it seems that Brock and Venom may well be spun as a rogue with grey morality – while this has worked well for several characters in the past (you could probably call Deadpool an anti-hero quite easily), some are keen to see where this new spin could lead. Others, however, are concerned by some of the dialogue in the trailer – though it can hardly be denied that seeing Venom in the flesh for the first time is nothing short of immensely satisfying.

The jury will still be out on Venom until it hits theaters – though Sony Pictures are apparently keen to make the movie the launching pad for their own Marvel universe – with plans to adapt Morbius, Nightwatch and Silver Sable and Black Cat in the near future. Of all cinematic universes, MCU has outlived them all thus far – can Sony offer a worthy opponent?
