Is There an N64 Mini on the Horizon? Some Super Sleuthing Says… Possiblyby 👨‍💻 Graham Pierrepoint

Anyone who has more than a passing interest in retro gaming will hardly have been able to escape the fact that Nintendo have led the charge in the past few years when it comes to monopolizing on former glories. The NES Classic Mini, a remake of their original 1985 home console with several big games bundled in and available in HD, famously ran out of stock just weeks after release – the SNES Classic Mini, released in 2017, did similarly well, though this time, the Big N were prepared for mass requests. Surely – from here on in – the next step is the Nintendo 64 – right? While Nintendo fans worldwide have been cautioned to stay calm and to not anticipate too much in the months and years to come – as nothing is ever clear with the brand until the last minute, when fans get hit by a rather nice surprise or two – it seems that some digging has unearthed what appears to be potential proof of a third classic console hitting shelves in the months to come.

It’s thanks to what appears to be a Japanese trademark filing – relating to the N64, originally released in 1996, and which appears to file for patents relating to video games, controllers and more besides. This only adds more fuel to the fire started by what appeared to be a filing with the European Union Intellectual Property Office last year, whereby it seemed that Nintendo were keen to trademark the rights to the console’s famous controller design. It’s safe to say that Nintendo have hardly been forthcoming when it comes to rumors about the N64 potentially making a comeback – but on the other hand, capitalizing on what is still a much-loved retro system surely makes financial sense for the brand.

This means that – while certain games are still available for download and to be enjoyed via the Wii U’s Virtual Console – gamers could be enjoying classics from the early days of 3D first-person platforming and more besides. Super Mario 64, Zelda : The Ocarina of Time, Mario Kart 64 – all perhaps a given – but whether or not gamers will be able to relive the joy of licensed titles such as Goldeneye 007 or Rare classics such as Banjo Kazooie on a Classic Mini will remain to be seen. Keep everything crossed for news!
