Will the X-Men and Fantastic Four Be Heading to the Marvel Cinematic Universe? We’re Very Close Indeedby 👨‍💻 Graham Pierrepoint

As if we didn’t already have plenty of heroes and villains in the Marvel Cinematic Universe – which experienced a colossal dramatic jolt in the form of Avengers: Infinity War only a few weeks ago – there is always going to be speculation as to who will be joining the ranks of Iron Man, The Hulk et al in future movies. While there has been fierce speculation and even some implication from dome quarters that the next Avengers movie will effectively end one run of movies in the MCU and start another, it seems that there are still plans in place to draft in a number of big comic book names to join in the drama and the intrigue. Those characters in particular come from two franchises – X-Men and the Fantastic Four – who have been operating via Fox for several years now on the big screen.

The good news is that plans for 21st Century Fox to join Disney aren’t completely dead in the water – though they may be considering a bid from Comcast, as what appeared to be a done deal late last year appears to have gotten a little more complex since then. Should Fox decide to accept Disney’s bid for purchase, this could effectively mean that properties such as X-Men and the Fantastic Four are free to join the ranks of the MCU – and possibly even get a reboot movie or two in the process. Both the X-Men and the Fantastic Four have been on the big screen multiple times already, with the latter’s most recent reboot having been a bomb with critics – and with the X-Men franchise continuing onwards, despite the character of Wolverine having effectively been retired, there’s no fixed plans in place as to where these characters will be going long-term – but for comic book movie fans, the thought of these characters joining up with Stark and co is an exciting one.

Marvel head Kevin Feige added fuel to the excitement by announcing that he is ‘just sitting waiting for a phone call’ as to whether or not these extra characters and back stories can be drafted into the existing MCU. This means that, at least on the Disney side of things, the gate is very much open – but we will have to see what Fox decides to do should they wish to join forces and bring their comic book stars over to Marvel Studios.
