The Incredibles 2 Is Already Making Box Office Historyby 👨‍💻 Graham Pierrepoint

It really has been a year for box office record-breaking already – and it largely seems to be thanks to Disney, as Avengers: Infinity War is still racking up the ticket money and as the firm lines up Wreck-It Ralph 2 later this year – though everyone in the US is paying attention to The Incredibles 2 right now, which is Pixar’s hugely long-awaited sequel to their 2004 movie, the latest in a long line of follow-ups to their big brands. The original Incredibles movie focused on the lives of a family who just so happen to have amazing super powers – and who are effectively forced to live normal lives after superheroes are effectively made illegal. The sequel does a rare job of following the first movie straight after it finishes – and for the most part, so far, it’s receiving heaps of praise from critics. After this and Coco, it seems that Pixar are back on the critical straight and narrow again.

It’s not just a hit with critics – audiences love it – and there’s no bigger sign that the movie is doing its job than with the figures that have already rolled in for its weekend at the North American box office. It’s reportedly raked in $180 million alone from its first weekend domestically, with $231 million assumed to have been generated overseas. This puts the movie on a fairly tall pedestal – it’s officially the biggest opening weekend of all time for an animated movie – which will be extremely good news for Pixar, who has gone through the wringer both critically in publicly in recent years – co-founder John Lasseter recently stepped down amid allegations of sexual harassment – though it seems that the allure of a sequel to what many regard to be one of the finest animated movies of all time is really holding up. This is a sequel that fans have been waiting for so long to see – and while the characters may not have aged a day since the last movie came out, the world, and cinema itself, has evolved – it’s at a crucial time where superhero movies are also leading the box office in several different quarters.
