A Eurovision Movie Is Happening - Masterminded by Will Ferrellby 👨‍💻 Graham Pierrepoint

The Eurovision Song Contest has always been a celebration of diverse music, performances, outlandish outfits, bizarre routines and more besides – it’s addictive viewing, and certainly continues to appeal to viewers and ardent fans across Europe. In recent years, it’s even extended its reach outside of the continent, with Australia having been a keen contender for some years, and with rumors on the grapevine claiming that the US may be keen to take part in the future. While it’s not yet clear whether or not that will ever be the case, one particularly famous American has taken plenty of time out to start up a passion project – a movie based on the contest.

The star in question is actor and comedian Will Ferrell, who has reportedly been a huge fan of the contest for several years – and was even spotted in the audience at the most recent celebrations in Portugal earlier this year. The news that Ferrell is to make a movie based around the utter madness that often is Eurovision has been met by mixed responses, though it’s not hard to see why many people would think it is an ideal fit. Ferrell is well-known for big, daft comedy movies and isn’t afraid to look a bit of a goofball in the process – a perfect combination for a movie that not only introduces a world of people to the bizarre brilliance that is the Eurovision Song Contest, but one which may also pull off brilliantly in the laugh stakes.

The movie is thought to be heading to Netflix as an exclusive in the near future, and is being written by Ferrell and Andrew Steele – under the tentative title Eurovision – and with the actor’s reported fascination for the contest, it’s pretty fair to say Ferrell is in a good position to do right by the event. Eurovision is a celebration of the weird, the wild, the wonderful and the wacky – why shouldn’t there be a movie celebrating all its greatness and more? Some have voiced concerns that the movie may mock the premise and the standing of the contest – but if Ferrell is as invested in the source material as is being suggested, there’s no reason why this can’t be a dynamite comic smash for Netflix. There’s no release date set as yet – but we’ll have a review for you whenever it may land!
