Has Johnny Depp's Biggie Smalls Movie Been Canned?

Has Johnny Depp's Biggie Smalls Movie Been Canned?by 👨‍💻 Graham Pierrepoint

One News Page recently reported that Johnny Depp – on the set of an upcoming movie called City of Lies – is being pursued by the film’s location manager with regard to an alleged assault. The plaintiff, Greg ‘Rocky’ Brooks, is also naming the director and producers of the movie in his suit – following what has been alleged to have been his firing - after refusing to sign a non-declaration as a result of the supposed assault. To put it succinctly, it appears to have been a production with a few clouds hanging overhead – and while this testimony is dependent upon Brooks’ record, and while the suit is yet to take full shape, something appears to have triggered the movie in question to evaporate into thin air.

City of Lies, which was set to star Depp and Forest Whitaker as a detective and a journalist respectively in pursuit of answers with regard to the murder of rapper Notorious B.I.G. (aka Christopher Wallace, or Biggie Smalls), appears to have been canned outright – with approximately a month to go before wide release. The Hollywood Reporter advises that Global Road Entertainment confirmed that the movie would no longer be given a US release date of September 7th 2018 – but, interestingly, no replacement dates were suggested. Even more intriguingly, there remain no public answers as to why the film has been shelved full stop.

The movie, which was due to open domestically despite allegations levelled at Depp and despite production having been completed considerable time ago, appears to now be floating in a state of limbo – and it’s not yet clear whether it will see the light of day at all, let alone in the format initially suggested. Will it head to streaming instead? Are the allegations levelled by Brooks responsible for decisions made to can the movie outright? It’s very unclear – and plenty of media outlets are scrabbling for any inkling as to why things have gone south for the thriller.

The movie – based on Randall Sullivan’s book Labyrinth – is thought to show the intense aftermath of the murder of Wallace in the mid-1990s, which occurred around the same time as the murder of fellow rapper Tupac Shakur. Wallace’s murder has never been solved – meaning that while the movie would have ended open-ended to an extent, it would have been interesting to see things from an investigatory perspective.
