'Crazy Rich Asians' has a surprising tie to Bay Area restaurant

SFGate Wednesday, 15 August 2018
'Crazy Rich Asians' has a surprising tie to Bay Area restaurantLawrence Chu is no stranger to celebrities. Everyone from Margaret Thatcher to Justin Bieber has dined at his beloved Los Altos restaurant, Chef Chu's.

The latest celebrity to be spotted around the nearly 50-year-old restaurant is Jon M. Chu, the director of "Crazy Rich Asians." The film is the first major studio production to feature an all-Asian cast (the first was "Joy Luck Club," set in San Francisco).

Chef Chu's is a familiar stomping ground to the director; his family owns the restaurant.

Chu was born in Palo Alto to Chinese immigrant parents. Years before the birth of their son, the elder Chus set up their namesake restaurant. It began as a takeout counter before evolving into the esteemed, celebrity-magnet it is today.
