Kevin Spacey's New Movie Opens... to $126by 👨‍💻 Adam Yardley

Kevin Spacey’s fall from grace as an A-List actor on both big and small screens has been widely documented – following rising allegations made against him with regard to sexual misconduct, including a reported incident between the actor and Star Trek Discovery’s Anthony Rapp (when Rapp was thought to be a minor), his name has all but disappeared from movie billboards. He was removed from last year’s All The Money in The World and replaced by Christopher Plummer for reshoots at extremely short notice – and around the same time, reports emerged that Spacey would not be appearing in the final season of Netflix’s House of Cards, which is set to debut without its once main character, Frank Underwood, soon enough. Since the allegations rose, Spacey’s profile has diminished – yet, there appears to have been a new movie featuring the star having arrived at US theaters recently – though it’s not doing so well.

Billionaire Boys Club, filmed in 2015, has reportedly overseen takings of around $126 from its opening weekend – largely as a result of having opened in just 10 theaters countrywide – based on average US cinema prices, this means that only around 14 people bought tickets to see the movie, based on the true story of Ponzi scheming in the 1980s. This is all despite an all-star cast – and despite distributor Vertical Entertainment pushing ahead with the release despite the allegations surrounding Spacey.

A statement from the studio advises that they hoped ‘distressing allegations’ regarding Spacey’s behavior wouldn’t ‘tarnish the release’ – though they have made it clear that they don’t condone such actions alleged of Spacey. However, despite the studio’s best intentions, it appears neither theaters nor moviegoers are keen to give the film the time of day.

The main cast includes household names such as Emma Roberts, Ansel Elgort, Cary Elwes, Billie Lourd and Taron Egerton – making it even stranger that the surrounding star power couldn’t elevate the movie’s chances of pulling in a few more viewers. It’s not clear exactly why Billionaire Boys’ Club has flopped so hard – though the very limited release and ongoing controversy surrounding its main star will likely hold water when it comes to the final takings. It’s thought that it may be taking around $800,000 internationally thus far – but with a budget of $15 million in sight, and with domestic takings belly-flopping, breaking even seems a task.
