As one of the most prolific fictional characters on screen and on paper for the past few decades, there’s little surprise as to why James Bond is so well-revered and why there is often so much buzz surrounding future movies featuring the super-spy to rule them all. Bond has been played on screen by several different actors in myriad different ways over the years, both straight and via spoof – and with Daniel Craig having only relatively recently agreed to return for his landmark fifth outing as 007, tongues have rarely stopped wagging with regard to who is going to succeed him.
A number of cryptic posts on social media from actor Idris Elba didn’t help matters, either. Elba’s name has been in the frame for some time for the role of 007, and with producer Barbara Broccoli having hinted that it is time for the character to be played by a non-white actor, the internet naturally went wild. Even when Elba himself had advised ‘don’t believe the HYPE’ online, some were quick to discuss whether or not HYPE was an acronym for a new evil organisation that Bond would be facing in his next adventure.
For Elba fans, the dream is – at least for now – over. The prolific star has recently been promoting his directorial debut, Yardie, and was asked outright as to whether or not he will be portraying Bond. His answer? Deep breath – a one-word ‘no’. That seems to put paid to any chance of us seeing the Luther star in the role any time soon – but in true Bond fashion, never say never (again)!
Elba’s confirmation comes just days after director Danny Boyle reportedly left the main chair behind the next Bond movie as a result of what’s being cited as ‘creative differences’ with the studio involved, MGM. Boyle was set to take over as a dramatic new change in directorial personnel following Sam Mendes’ last outing with Spectre. At this time it’s unclear as to what will be happening next with the franchise – with details remaining fairly tight-lipped as to what Bond will be up to in what seems to be Craig’s final outing as the world’s most in-demand secret agent. The bets are back on as to who will be sitting in the director’s chair – let’s see how this one pans out!
