Just when you thought you’d heard the last of Ed Sheeran (seriously?), the global superstar singer-songwriter goes and pulls something new out of his hat. The British singer-guitarist has sold and streamed to millions worldwide and, as such, he’s pretty much seen as pop royalty in 2018. Is it his humble, everyman look and his sweet, real-life-inspired lyrics? Possibly – and while no two pop stars are ever quite the same, there’s plenty to be said for Sheeran’s unique appeal in what remains an extremely varied entertainment landscape. So what’s next for the star?
Sheeran himself has confirmed that he will be involved in a movie written by Richard Curtis and directed by Danny Boyle – and that it will star Himesh Patel in a tale about a singer who finds himself to be alone in remembering The Beatles. It sounds to be a mix between musical journey and high fantasy – and apparently, Sheeran will be appearing as himself along the way. “I discover him (Patel’s character) and take him on tour,” the star confirmed. “Then he gets much, much bigger than me through doing stuff. It’s very clever.”

It’s not the first time that a pop star has made the leap from music to acting, and while this has had varied results over the years, Sheeran has at least had some experience, and through what remains one of the most popular US TV shows right now. He had previously appeared in a small speaking role as a Lannister soldier in HBO’s Game of Thrones, to mixed reception – and Sheeran himself has acknowledged his prior attempts at acting by stating that this new Curtis-Boyle project will offer him the opportunity to ‘learn how to act’.
Sheeran reportedly filmed his scenes for the upcoming movie, as yet untitled, over two months in the middle of a tour schedule. “With the Game of Thrones thing, that was literally me popping in for a day and making a cameo – but this was like full days on set, like 12-hour days,” he states. “I would have four days of gigging and then three days of shooting a film. I was playing myself so I don’t think I was that bad.”
Fans of Ed Sheeran rejoice – you’ll be seeing him take to the big screen soon enough – playing himself, no less – we’ll have more news for you soon!
