Sony Leaps Into the Classic Console Game With Its Mini PlayStation

Sony Leaps Into the Classic Console Game With Its Mini PlayStationby 👩‍💻 Alice Monroe

Surely it was only a matter of time? The huge success of Nintendo’s NES Classic Mini, a home console which came packaged with several classic games from the early years of the NES, paved the way for video game nostalgia to become bankable again. Nintendo followed the unit with a console based on its follow-up, the SNES, while Sega have made steps with a Genesis rendition, and a Commodore 64 unit has also hit the shelves. Sony, however, seemed to largely hang out of this game for a while – but at last, fans of the original PlayStation can now rejoice, as the firm will be re-releasing 20 classic games built into a mini version of their maiden console this holiday season.

The original Sony PlayStation was released in the mid 90s and effectively helped to revolutionize the gaming industry for good. Up until that time, games had largely been available via cartridge on a console basis, with PCs making use of floppy disks and CDs. The PlayStation changed all of that with a system that accepted CD-based games, produced relatively cheaply and available by the thousands. To celebrate the memory of this amazing console, Sony will be upscaling 20 games into HD via their Mini Classic, which is thought to be arriving this December at a price tag of £89.99 (around $119 USD).

Not all of the titles have been formally announced for the system just yet, which has of course open the doors wide open for speculation as to what may be coming next. So far, big names such as Final Fantasy VII, widely regarded as the most popular instalment in the franchise, Tekken 3 and Ridge Racer Type 4 will be heading to the mini unit for fans to enjoy once again. The relaunch of the system is a timely move to tap into the market for 90s nostalgia, and is also a great chance for some forgotten classics to be enjoyed once again.

While many people may still want to set up their old PlayStations and to dust off their old games, the allure of an HDMI unit with built-in games at a relatively affordable price will likely have many gamers already buzzing wildly. Can Sony replicate the success of Nintendo in this regard? And will Nintendo respond with an N64 Mini in years to come?
